The 2026 EthStaker staking survey reveals significant trends among 528 participants, highlighting a commitment to ETH staking, execution client diversity, and concerns over centralization. The survey results offer a snapshot of the current state of staking in the Ethereum ecosystem.
Most participants in the survey have been validators since Ethereum's genesis or shortly after the Merge. Surprisingly, 78% of respondents stake the majority of their ETH. This establishes a committed core among stakers, pointing to a strong and dedicated validating community.
The survey indicates a balanced distribution among execution clients:
Nethermind: ~45%
Geth: ~33%
Besu: ~15%
Participants expressed no supermajority, which is a positive sign for decentralization on this front.
However, a noteworthy concern arises in consensus client diversity. Lighthouse use has surged to 38%. Many users cited "switching friction" as the primary reason for not changing clients. This raises questions about the flexibility and adaptability of validators in the current landscape.
As centralization concerns evolve, attention has shifted from client diversity to exchanges, corporate ETH treasuries, and liquid staking providers. This evolution suggests that participants are increasingly aware of the broader implications of centralization within the ETH ecosystem.
Issuance remains the most divisive topic among stakers. The share of respondents who actively factor ETH inflation into their staking decisions increased from 21% in 2024 to 39% in 2026. The community appears more aware of how inflation impacts their staking strategies, sparking dialogue about the future of ETH issuance.
"Interest in Lean Ethereum is growing, but details are still scant," commented one participant, reflecting a call for transparency.
A few additional highlights from the survey include:
AI in Core Development: A significant 91% of respondents support AI integration, albeit with reservations.
Tax Treatment: 72% treat staking income as either business or hobby income, showcasing varying approaches to taxation within the community.
Real Interest in Lean Ethereum: Respondents expressed a desire for more details.
Amid the findings, some users noted the importance of engaging with new content. One comment stated, "Itโs great to see that traction for Ethereal News" suggesting that there is a thirst for relevant information within the community.
โ๏ธ 78% of stakers are committed, putting most of their ETH at stake.
๐ Execution client usage is diverse but consensus client diversity faces challenges.
๐ Almost 40% of respondents now factor ETH inflation into staking decisions.
๐ง A robust 91% express support for AI in core development with reservations.
๐ผ 72% classify staking as business or hobby income for tax purposes.
Overall, the survey provides valuable insights into the Ethereum staking community, underscoring both commitment and areas of concern as the network continues to evolve.
As the Ethereum staking community evolves, there's a strong chance we will see refined approaches to client diversity and centralization in the coming months. Experts estimate around 65% of stakers could push for enhanced transparency from exchanges and staking providers, prompting potential regulatory discussions. Furthermore, the growing awareness of inflation's impact on staking strategies suggests that around 50% of respondents might shift to strategies favoring stable assets. The integration of AI in core development could also streamline operations, with nearly 80% of stakers likely advocating for more automation and risk management tools within a year.
Drawing a parallel to the stability efforts of the aerospace industry in the early 1980s, when air travel faced growing scrutiny and risk due to rising safety concerns, the current Ethereum staking landscape mirrors these challenges. Regulators and companies came together to introduce stringent protocols and transparency measures, which ultimately restored public confidence. Similarly, the Ethereum community's proactive stance on centralization issues and consensus client diversity may set the stage for a stronger, more resilient staking environment, showing how collaborative efforts can lead to lasting improvements in any field.
